I created the very detailed necklaces with clever embroidered skulls and unique hearts that I found on my trip to Mexico City and Oaxaca last year. I created all the cords from my vast yarn collection. The felt hearts and skulls with tassels and glass hearts are from Coyoacan and the carved wooden hearts and the tiny cloth hearts are from Oaxaca. These wonderful little hearts are painstaking stuffed and sewn by Oaxacan women and have been sold for years at the Basilica of the Virgen de Soledad, the patron saint of Oaxaca. I have always thought of them as cloth milagros. The felt “beads” are from India, as is one of the components of the cords I specially created — silk sari yarn. Old silk saris are taken apart and the silk threads spun to make beautiful multicolored silk yarns. The sari yarns are loosely spun, hence the loose yarns on the necklaces. The backs of the cloth hearts are all different colors — no two sides are ever the same color!!
I sold my jewelry designs (The Crozat Collection) for years in the physical gallery space. I have created textile art for years and won awards for my work before I opened Las Manos Magicas in the early 1990’s. Now that the gallery is only online, I have more time to create! Enjoy!!
The white clay skull necklaces and La Catrina necklace here are from Oaxaca. They are sold on very long cords tied at the ends, so I added clasps to them. I created the white skull earrings from clay skulls from Oaxaca and a variety of beads and flowers. They are one-of-a-kind.
